Like a dead bird, kinda...?

There's lots of time for me to paint in Grants Pass.
I did this one in two different sittings, I believe,
though I haven't counted hours.
I'm working on a few nest/bird/egg paintings right now,
since I'm apparently monomaniacal (or just really unimaginative).

It's 12x24 inches, oil,
and for sale.
It'd make a perfect Easter present.
Let me know if you're interested.

Fibulas, Ferns, and Fungi.

Jordan got his first tattoo today,
a skull and crossbones,
mixed with some botany stuff.
I almost didn't want to do it,
since it would rob him of that sacred rite-of-passage for all tattooed people.
You know, that terrible first tattoo that you regret for your whole life
(or try to cover with a floating peapod thingy?)
oh well.
His loss, I'm sure.

But I did get to have lots of fun with this,
and he sat like a champ.
Almost 5 hours, and he didn't move or fuss at all.
That's pretty impressive even if it's not your first tattoo.

It's my weekend now.
So much to do, too,
but I'll try and get back to the shop and paint some.
I've been working on a few pieces at once these days,
and should have stuff to unveil soon enough.

I'm planning a Portland guest spot soon,
and will have details for that asap.

And I'll begin now taking appointments for Minnesota starting mid-April.
Email me what you're looking to get,
size, and types of days that work best for you,
and I'll start figuring it all out.

But for now,
come visit Grants Pass,
bring money and good ideas.
And more mushrooms, kids.
Always more.

A kissing book.

Valentine's Day!
I don't know what ya'll did for your sweety-pies today,
but I tortured mine for over four hours with needles.
So romantic, right?
I did feel bad about all the pain-causing,
so afterwards I got take-out Thai food,
watched a movie on the couch with her,
and then read a few chapters of The Princess Bride aloud.
I know you love the movie,
(otherwise we're not cool),
but the book is awesome, too.
The dialogue is almost the same,
there's tons of backstory,
and it's somehow even more absurd.
No kidding.

The tattoo is not yet finished,
and it's just a crappy iphone photo,
but you get the idea.
I know I always say it,
(and it's not always true)
but since we're married,
I'm pretty f'n sure I'll get a better photo soon.
The book pictured in the tattoo isn't The Princess Bride,
it's of a not-yet-written book.
But once it IS written,
it'll probably be a "kissing book".
I'll keep you posted.
Happy Valentine's Day, everyone*.

*unless you're not into The Princess Bride,
in which case, you're probably alone,
and deserve to be.

Five hours of flowers.

Liz and family were in Oregon to celebrate her grandmother's 90th birthday,
but they took a tiny detour to get some tattoo work first.
We had talked about a shoulder cap of flowers back in Minnesota,
and we ended up doing it 1500 miles away.
We stenciled some flowers on,
then drew some more,
looked at it the mirror,
drew more,
and then drew some more.
A little shoulder cap turned into a meandering meadow of flowers.
We integrated it into her waves chestpiece,
though I didn't get a photo of that part yet.
Hopefully, I'll get some healed photos emailed to me soon.

It was cool having a Minnesota client visit me in Grants Pass,
I got to show off my sexy, new, (temporary) tattoo shop.

Today Amy, Jaime, Meryl, the dog and I are headed to the coast again.
We're on the lookout for lighthouses, dead birds, tide pools,
redwoods, moss and mushrooms.
They have to leave tomorrow morning,
so we're doing one last farewell outing.
Having them here has been amazing,
and it's going to be sad and quiet without them around.

But since we have more to do on Amy's sleeve,
I'm booking a guest spot out East for this summer.
I have a list of folks who want some tattoo time,
but spots will be super limited.
If you want in,
send me an email with your idea,
and I'll try to sort out all the details soon.

So let the party and the sounds rock on

Amy and Jaime heard there was a "Best Visitor" competition going on,
(or maybe they didn't)
but they showed up with a dozen vegan Portland doughnuts anyway,
a box of Sweet Life vegan cake,
and some handmade antler treats.
And that was the first day.
It's been non-stop funtimes since.
I drove to Crescent City with them, too,
and found where the big trees were hiding.
Coastal Redwoods are no joke.

Then I got to visit Battery Point Lighthouse again,
but this time there was a little more daylight,
and when it's low tide (it was)
you can walk to it (i did)!
So sexy.
And so here's a better, closer photo.

We also got some tattooing in,
and worked on Amy's antlered birdhouse sleeve.
She sat for a few hours,
and we outlined the whole rest of it.
Then we started shading, too,
and got some of the squirrel filled in.
She made it 5.5 hours before an evening on the couch with
Thai food and Rocky Horror Picture Show was calling her name.

Here's my gift from Jaime,
a business card holder cut from an antler.
She knows antlers are the answer,
and now all of my clients will, too.
Good thing my new cards arrived the very same day.
It's so fresh.

We have a few days left before we have to say goodbye,
and we have lots more plans.
I'm playing hooky and going lighthouse hopping on Friday.
After being stuck in Minnesota for so long,
I can't get enough of the ocean.
10,000 lakes don't have shit on the Pacific.

More Peafowling

Korel came down to Grants Pass from Olympia, WA,
and we did some shading on her peacock sleeve.
We have three appointments planned in March, too,
and we're hoping to get pretty close to done with those.
We had started this back in November at Optic Nerve in PDX.
I'm super excited about it,
and thrilled she's able to travel all the way down here.
(6ish hours each way)
She read about Handsome Adam's visit,
and tried to out-awesome him by bringing us coffee and veggies and treats.

Good thing we're pros at having guests,
because Amy and Jaime arrive tonight.
They're taking the long(er) way down here,
so there's time to wash the bedsheets in between visitors,
and they get to see the sexy Oregon coastline.

SKINNED ALIVE - A FILM BY BART SARIC - A 'SKATER MADE' FILM

Art Godoy-Bart Saric-Steve Godoy

"It was sometime in 2002, I was busy producing art and skateboarding films. I had just finished a unique skateboard lifestyle film, called “DAZE IN THE LIFE“. In that film I edited a part featuring Eric Dressen skateboarding. The segment follows him to a late night tattoo spot in Los Angeles, where he gets a calf piece by Clay Decker. The films chapter was well received. The details of the tattoo process were visually exposed through the artist’s eye without losing the cultural integrity.

One day not too long after, a dvd sales manager named Tom Allen, approached me to create a tattoo-inspired movie with skateboarding. Kind of like what I did in “DAZE IN THE LIFE”, but full-length. He worked for a distributor that carried my film.

It was pretty much a no brainer. I grew up in the era that dawned the birth of this fusion before anything like that was considered cool at school. You were pretty much a fool. It was taboo in the 1970’s -mid 1980’s for surfers or skateboarders to sport big tatt’s. An outlaw’s detail, if you will.

Tough people had tattoos, back then. People kicking the shit out of other people, shooting them with guns, over tattoos. I’d seen a few things “Pop-Off” while growing up in Los Angeles, as an artist that skateboards and surfs. Expressionist perspectives became clear on the streets. These sub-cultures, along with the music, naturally merged and eventually influenced the way of the lifestyles. Art and sport, a hybrid culture bound only by the limits of the individual’s imagination. All it’s own. Filled with rich and colorful characters.

Originally, I wanted to name the project, “Scarred For Life”. But, a skateboard book already had this title. That’s when Tom offered up the title “Skinned Alive”. Now, there was an older B-type horror movie with the same title. But this project was completely different. It was a documentary based on reality. Professional skateboarding and tattooing unveiled !

All I know is, that if I were committed to diving into these 2 highly respected and diverse lifestyles, I did NOT want to BULLSHIT ! That was my job as a filmmaker.

Bring out the grit and the gristle. The love and the passion that came along with those that pioneered it. It had to star those that were at the forefront of this revolution. This project would not be done without Art and Steve Godoy in it, period.

They are the catalyst in the stories and godfathers to it’s bastard style. Fred Smith, a partner in crime, with their disciples Jason Jessee and Bill Danforth. We needed to feature some of the O.G.’s like Mark Mahoney, Danny Romo and Tim Hendricks, who’ve been slinging the ink to these guys. And those Pro’s that were influenced soon after, Eric Dressen, Jesse Martinez, Neil Heddings and Kyle Yanagimoto.

What “SKINNED ALIVE” did NOT need to be was the saturated and imitated aftermath of mainstream fashion. This was the moment I realized I had to make this film before someone else made it with the wrong people in it. Authenticity is a natural and essential quality in good documentary films. Something that translates with the subject’s in this film. If anyone has the jurisdiction to discuss and educate us about the history and interrelationships of these professional lifestyles, it’s this cast.

They are legend, the footage is classic and the interviews are candid. The editing is colorful and the actions very real. It is a quintessential, first and definitive film of its kind. Check it out ! You won’t be disappointed."

Company.

Handsome Adam gave us a week head-start,
and then arrived in Grants Pass ready for serious hangout time.
He knew no one was going to try and visit us our first week here,
and so showing up on day 8 was a safe bet for First Place.
Adam is a damn good house guest.
He's up for whatever,
down for anything,
and does dishes till you tattoo his hands.
He helped us explore and get acquainted with our new surroundings since pretty much everything was new to us.
He's like the Lewis and Clark of houseguests,
scoping it out and paving the trail for future visitors.
If you come and stay with us here
(and don't run out of gas in an unpaved national park),
you'll owe Handsome Adam a thank you.
Here he is in a treehouse we found by accident.

We did some drives and hikes through Grants Pass and the rest of Southern Oregon,
the redwoods, and all the way to the California coast.
If Minnesota is the land of lakes,
Oregon has to be the state of rivers.
So many.

Nothing ever gets a chance to dry out,
so moss just grows on everything.
Telephone poles, highways, roofs,
everything just gets sexier with a little moss.
Sometimes it's the only color around.

On the day we drove to Crescent City, CA,
we bumped into Battery Point Lighthouse at the perfect time.
Apparently there's a second lighthouse in that town,
(two in one town?! c'mon...)
so I'll be headed back there next week when the new guests arrive.

It was a bummer seeing him off this morning,
but he threatens to come back again before we leave in April.
Awesome.
Quality and quantity.
Handsome Adam knows what's up.
